Conflict in Central Africa is sustained not only by what flows into war zones, but by what violence produces and extracts. Timber, gold, diamonds and critical minerals move through regional and international supply chains, while illicit taxation, extortion and ransom payments generate revenues that sustain violence and enable the capture of economic activity by armed actors, criminal networks and their proxies.
These “proceeds of violence” move through opaque networks of traders, intermediaries and financial channels, often entering legitimate markets and obscuring their origins.
Drawing on field research and case studies, leading experts will unpack how commodities and illicit revenues are extracted, moved and laundered across different conflict contexts.
